The grapefruit is thought to have originated from a citrus fruit called the large lemon tree, native to the Caribbean. It is now cultivated in the USA, South America, the Caribbean and Israel. There are many varieties of grapefruit, including the ruby or pink grapefruit, from which essential oils can also be extracted.
Grapefruit is high in vitamin C and is known as a cleansing and beneficial food for the body.

As with other citrus oils, grapefruit oxidises quickly and the smell and therapeutic properties deteriorate after 6-12 months. The scent has an uplifting effect.
The top note of the aroma. The aroma lasts up to 24 hours.

Grapefruit oil is cooling and slightly astringent. It is a mild tonic that shares its refreshing and detoxifying properties with other citrus oils. It is a pleasant, refreshing addition to many bath and shower preparations and massage mixtures. Grapefruit blends particularly well with other oils such as citrus, clove, cypress, ginger, lavender, and rosemary.
The main effect of grapefruit oil is on the liver, where it has a cooling and detoxifying effect. It can calm symptoms of irritability, anger and overheating and is a great morning stimulant that can be used in shower gel or bath oil after hangovers, long nights out or other abuses.
Grapefruit is an easy laxative that stimulates peristalsis and will also relieve constipation. It is one of the main essential oils used to treat obesity. It can help reduce appetite and boost fat metabolism.
It generally has a detoxifying effect on the body and can help cleanse the lymph and reduce cellulite. Grapefruit is an excellent choice for a detox programme. Use with massage oil or mix with sea salts for baths.
It also has a positive effect on the respiratory system and is useful in treating colds and flu with fever symptoms. It can be combined with other suitable oils, such as eucalyptus or pine, for inhalation.
Grapefruit oil has cleansing, antiseptic, cooling and slightly astringent properties; it is beneficial for oily skin, open pores and acne. Use in lotions or steam baths for the face. It will also help to tone and tighten sagging skin, for example when losing weight.

Mūsų saugos patarimai
We recommend avoiding the oxidation (+) limonene found in grapefruit oil. Store the oil in a dark, airtight container in the fridge. Add an antioxidant to preparations containing grapefruit oil.
Įspėjimai
Unlike most other citrus essences, grapefruit oil is not phototoxic. However, the oil has a very short shelf life and must be used within six months of purchase. Once oxidised, it can cause skin irritation and sensitivity.
